Technology
Recent wireless technologies, as Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), introduce novel solutions and opportunities in process where remote identification and communication is required: connectivity without wiring, communication in motion, cost reduction, environmental sustainability, access to remote information, distributed database. Applicative scenarios are numerous:
- automatic identification of goods and assets entering in or coming out of a warehouse, using simple RFID tags on products;
- climate monitoring in agricolture (e.g. a vineyard or a greenhouse) using wireless sensor networks, allowing an optimization of irrigation and maintenance;
- distributed traffic monitoring for smart roads, or parking lots monitoring, with wireless sensors, with extremely low infrastructure costs;
- temperature monitoring for food and pharma products in cold-chain applications, with the aid of semi-passive battery-assisted RFID-UHF tags with temperature sensors or active wireless sensors;
- automatic access control for vehicles (parkings, private or public fleets), using simple low-cost windscreen RFID tags.
